Garage Door Opener: Repair or Replace?
An opener that has stopped working is not automatically an opener that needs replacing. Some failures are a $150 part; some are a sign the unit has reached the end of a sensible life. The useful question is not “is it broken” but “what is broken, and how old is the rest of it.”
The short answer
First: make sure it is the opener
A surprising share of “dead opener” calls are actually a broken spring. If the motor runs but the door does not move, or the door feels enormously heavy when you pull the release cord, the springs are the more likely culprit — see Garage Door Spring Replacement Cost. Openers move a balanced door; they are not built to lift dead weight, and running one against a broken spring is how a working opener becomes a broken one.
Usually worth repairing
- Photo-eye sensors misaligned or dirty. The door reverses immediately or refuses to close. Often a five-minute alignment.
- Remote or keypad not working. Frequently a battery, a reprogram, or a receiver board.
- Stripped drive gear. The motor whirs but nothing moves. A gear kit is a standard, affordable repair on most chain drives.
- Broken trolley or carriage. Common, and a straightforward part.
- Limit or travel settings drifted. The door stops short or bounces back. Usually an adjustment.
Usually worth replacing
- No photo-eye safety sensors at all. Openers manufactured before 1993 predate the federal requirement for photo-eye reversing sensors. If your unit has no sensors near the floor either side of the door, it is both very old and missing the single most important safety feature on a garage door. Replace it.
- Logic board failure on an older unit. The board is often the most expensive part; on a fifteen-year-old opener it rarely makes sense.
- Fixed-code remotes. Older openers used a fixed code that can be captured and replayed. Modern units use rolling codes that change every use.
- Repeated repairs. Two service calls in a year on the same unit is the unit telling you something.

Two features worth the money on the Gulf Coast
- Battery backup. When the power goes out here, it is often for a reason that also means you would very much like to move your car. A backup battery lets the door operate through an outage. In hurricane country this is not a luxury feature.
- Wi-Fi / app control. Genuinely useful for the “did I leave the garage open” question, and for letting a neighbour in without handing over a code.
The safety check nobody does
Once a month, with the door open, place a roll of paper towel flat on the floor in the door’s path and close it. The door should touch, stop, and reverse. Then wave something through the photo-eye beam mid-close — it should reverse immediately. If either test fails, stop using the door and get it looked at. These are the tests that prevent the accidents.
What to review in an estimate
- Ask whether the quote is opener only or installed, and whether the old unit is hauled away.
- Ask about horsepower or force rating relative to your door — a heavy insulated double door wants more than the entry-level unit.
- Ask what warranty covers the motor, the belt or chain, and the labour, and for how long.
- Ask whether new safety sensors and a new wall control are included, or reused.
The bottom line
Diagnose before you decide, and check the springs before you blame the motor. Small electrical and mechanical faults are usually worth fixing; missing safety sensors, dead logic boards on old units, and repeat failures are usually worth replacing.
